Ruth: After leaving the city of Lublin we reconnected with the Vistula River at Kazimierz Dolny. It’s one of Poland’s prettiest towns and has been popular with tourists since the 19th century. We arrived just after the weekend, but were surprised to see the central square still bustling with school groups. Shortly after 4:00 they were all counted and loaded back on buses and the square was returned to the locals and a handful of tourists. We were staying in a beautiful manor house right below the castle ruins. It’s the kind of place Gord and I never imagined staying in when we were young and poor.

Our home for the night.

Gord loves the shrines. I’m going to let him put one in each day.

We have had a great range of accommodation on this trip. For us it has been affordable, but like so many places inflation has driven it out of reach for many of the local residents.  We are spending about the same as we were in Spain, but we are generally in nicer places, often with a huge breakfast and either our own or a shared kitchen. For folks that like to eat this is great!

Polish hosts are wonderful, and wherever possible we try to choose places where we actually meet them. This is not always easy in the new corporate rental market with self check ins and coded doors. Last night was the the exact opposite of this. We rolled into a working farm and with no common language other than smiles and gestures we were welcomed like family. Our host excitedly told us, in Polish, that her sister lived in Toronto. At that point I did pull out Google translate to continue our conversation. “Yes, her sister misses Poland, and yes, it’s a long way away from family.” She left us with a large bowl of fresh strawberries from her garden and later popped in with a fresh loaf of bread. We settled in to cook our own dinner in our cute little apartment. This afternoon they passed us on the highway about 75 kms from their farm, waving and hanging out the window.

Ok I’m feeling guilty I didn’t include more of these in other blogs.
