We have left the quiet Northeast and are staying three nights in the Northwest at Kabira Bay. The Bay is the number one tourist attraction on the island. However, even with the arrival of bus tours and taxis filled with tourists bound for glass bottom boat trips, Kabira is surprisingly quiet in November. Before the first bus and after the last, Kabira is a sleepy place set on a stunning bay. Our house is a few blocks away from the center and it is peaceful and lovely, set in a garden with a banana orchard (heavily damaged by the typhoon).
Swimming is not allowed in the bay, likely to protect the valuable black pearls that are farmed here. So yesterday we cycled over to Iachii beach, 9 kms away, and had a stunning snorkel. We walked out through the shallow water to the edge of the reef where snorkeling tour boats were moored There was coral in almost every shade, including the prized blue coral. The fish were also stunning with several species I hadn’t seen before.
I’m taking the mornings off trying to get over a cold, while Gord does some riding and hiking in the area. Snorkelling with a cough is likely not ideal, but the water is warm and clear and I just can’t stay away. We may return to the same beach today in the afternoon. An 18 km ride with two big climbs and a 40 minute swim is taking it easy, right?

A very odd attraction on the road to Kibira.
